If there's one thing we're looking forward to more than anything in 2017 it's new colour trends. Whilst there's been lots of hype around Pantone's Colour of the Year  - Greenery, we thought we'd bring your attention to another, more versatile Colour of The Year - Denim Drift.

Back in September, Denim-Drift  was named as the 'must-have' Colour Of  2017 by Dulux. Like Pantone, every year Dulux gather a specialist team of experts to develop future colour forecasts based on emerging trends that shape the way people live. This includes interior design, fashion, architecture,  social and economic influences.

Choosing 'Life in a new light', as the overriding theme for 2017, Denim-Drift was the blue-hue thought to best capture this mood of the moment. Experts at Dulux said the colour is "truly adaptable, fitting into all life and interior styles, making it the perfect choice for reflecting our new perspective for 2017" and we couldn't agree more.

To complement Denim Drift, the Dulux global aesthetics centre have developed a family colour palette featuring a spectrum of blue tones. Here's how to make them work in your home.

How to decorate with Denim Drift

Swatch of different shades of blue

Dip-Dye Effect

Make the most of Denim-Drift's wide spectrum of hues by going for the ombre/dip-dyed look. Whether used on your wall or your bed linen, gently introduce the colour by starting with the darker tones at the bottom, working your way up with lighter tones at the top. It's a look that not only creates the illusion of space but also has a timeless, effortless appeal.

Dark Depth

If you're consigning Denim-Drift to one room, such as a living room or bedroom, contrast the light, muted shades of grey-blue with spots of deep, dark moody blues to add depth and interest. Dark blue is very calming and tranquil so it's a great trick for spaces where you want to sit back and relax.

Blend your Blues

Colour palettes don't have to take over a whole room - blend blues together in a corner of blue paradise, such as your favourite nook or reading corner. The trick to using one colour in a small space is to use different yet complementary hues within the palette, mixing fabrics and textiles to add depth and blend shades. The blue velvet lounge chair in the image below is what really makes the whole corner stand out.

Blue Accents

Another great way to decorate with Denim Drift is to use it in smaller doses as an accent colour. It's so eye catching that even the smallest hint of it won't go unnoticed, and the versatility of the shade means it will sit nicely in an colour scheme, be it with earthly neutrals or light pastels.

Sunset Hues

One colour that looks particularly pretty when sat with Denim Drift is soft, blush pink. Blush pink has also been having a moment in the design world, with Rose Quartz being chosen as Pantone's Colour of the Year for 2016. The muted pink against the muted blue creates a lovely look that brings to mind peaceful, sunset hues.

Blue in the Bedroom

Colour has a huge effect on our emotions, and nowhere more so than in the home. Because blue is so calming and tranquil it's a great colour to bring into the bedroom. Blue textiles, linen, furniture and walls help create a soothing, inspiring place to sit back and relax in.

Start with your Sofa

If you like Denim Drift but you're not sure where you'd use it, why not start with a new sofa?  The blue-grey hue is so adaptable, it'd suit a variety of living rooms, and sofas make a great focal points for colour schemes. Plus, because it's so versatile, it'll sit nicely with textiles and cushions of any colour, which you can constantly change to suit the season.  A Denim Drift sofa is basically a blank canvas for your creativity.

Blue Textiles

The easiest, quickest way to inject a new colour that you like into your home is with textiles. Linen, blankets, knits cushions and throws create a really cosy, comfortable and informal feel in your home and add lovely finishing details to your interior.

Coastal Colours

Bring the colours of the coastline into your interior to create a cool and calming nautical look. Blues, greens and whites mix really well together, evoking the serenity of the sea even if you don't live by one.

Coloured Cabinets

Another trend prediction for 2017 is a move from light, beachy woods to dark timbers. Painted oak finishes are a great way to add splashes of colour to your home so if you want to go bold with blue, why not try it on your kitchen/bathroom cabinets? Indigo blues match really well with copper lights and other metallic accents as shown in this stunning kitchen below.
